Pursuing technological advancements and mastery of new production techniques are both pillars of the LABhaus mission. Our upcoming project in Amagansett, NY, showcases a particular advanced production technique which we hope to integrate into a range of current and future projects: CNC plasma cut sheet metal.
Starting with custom scripted algorithms, we generated an undulating grid pattern of various sized square openings. The variations in the density creates a subtle interlocking wave-pattern when viewed at a distance. Up close, the variations allow for certain rooms–such as the living room–to be more open for light and certain rooms–such as bathrooms and bedrooms–to be more closed for privacy. The screening also provides reduced solar gain.
The custom fabricated aluminum screens are concentrated on the southern exposure of the project, to both maximize reduction of solar gain and provide privacy from the street.
